Catuaí is a hybrid of Caturra and Mundo Novo, selected for their size-to-yield ratio; as the Catuaí coffee tree can be classified as a dwarf variety. Both parent varieties were developed in Brazil throughout the 1960s and 70s.
In Colombia, this crop is less common than its parent Caturra; however, it is one of the most cultivated varieties in Brazil, thanks to its resistance to extended dry periods. Outside of Brazil, it is mainly grown in Central America. By growing it in the valleys of El Cauca, Colombia — with their distinct microclimates and high altitudes — farmers can achieve an extraordinary balance of citrus acidity and nutty sweetness.
